Oscar winning director Martin McDonagh has set his first movie after Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and the early reports are very intriguing. Sources told Deadline that McDonagh’s next movie, The Banshees of Inisheer, will tell a story of two lifelong friends who struggle to cope with their lives after one abruptly ends their friendship, which leads to “alarming consequences.”
The movie is set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland, and the casting news is very exciting. According to the report, The Banshees of Inisheer will bring back Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in the lead roles, both of whom starred in McDonagh’s In Bruges in very memorable performances. They had electric chemistry for In Bruges, so it’s exciting to learn they’re coming back to play troubled friends once again.
The film will be made at Searchlight Pictures, which was formerly known as Fox Searchlight up until Disney acquired Fox and killed the name.
2008’s In Bruges was McDonagh’s breakout feature-length directorial debut, following his Oscar win for the live-action short film, Six Shooter. A black comedy, In Bruges follows the story of two hitmen, Gleeson and Farrell, who come to terms with their choices with devastating results. Ralph Fiennes and Clemence Poesy also starred in the movie.
McDonagh earned an Academy Award nomination for In Bruges (Best Writing, Original Screenplay), and he followed up that movie with Seven Psychopaths in 2012 starring Farrell, Sam Rockwell, and Christopher Walken.
His third feature-length movie was 2017’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards. The movie won two Oscars, including Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Frances McDormand) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Sam Rockwell).
There is no word on a release date for The Banshees of Inisheer or who else might star in it.
