The killer doll Chucky has been terrorizing audiences since 1988, and this past year, the series got an update and reboot, with the focus less on ghostly possession and more on smart devices learning to kill. Now, the Child’s Play reboot has arrived on Blu-ray, DVD, and digitally, and two of the special features are truly bizarre.
Claymation animator Lee Hardcastle has two shorts on the disc–only one is available digitally–one of which features Chucky brutally murdering his victims, including a lot of claymation blood. The other short, which you can see below, captures the essence of the new movie, as electronic devices, controlled by Chucky, kill everyone in their path. It’s a bit jarring to see claymation as violent as this, as many are used to something more akin to Wallace and Gromit.
Child’s Play has a rough go with critics, earning a 48 on Metacritic. In his review of Child’s Play, GameSpot’s Chris E. Hayner said, “Child’s Play is decent but flawed. While it includes some truly gut-wrenching horror moments and a few jump scares, that it takes too long to fully embrace what it is–a techno-slasher–is disappointing. With the table set, though, hopefully, it will be received well enough to get a sequel that doesn’t waste any time in unleashing Chucky’s full potential.”
